The crash took place around 7:42 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 6 on the Interstate 395-Route 32 connector in Waterford, according to the Cohanzie Fire Company.

Responding firefighters from Waterford’s Quaker Hill Fire Company and the Cohanzie Fire Company found an overturned horse trailer, perched over an embankment, with two horses onboard, when they arrived.

Firefighters worked to stabilize the trailer, as L&M Paramedic Lindsay Congdon coordinated the response of multiple veterinarians from around the area, while the state police and firefighters closed the roadways, said the Cohanzie Fire Company on Facebook.

Once veterinarians arrived on the scene, they worked with firefighters to make entry into the trailers, discovering that one of the horses was entrapped. The vets sedated the horses, so firefighters could use the Jaws of Life to remove the damaged area of the trailer that was trapping the horse and to allows for a space to remove the animals, the department said.

The first horse was successfully extricated from the trailer within about an hour after the initial accident, with the second horse freed after about an hour-and-a-half of work.

Once freed, the horses were moved by an area farm’s trailer. No one on the scene was injured.
